The Elements
Of Story
Elements are the small building blocks that come together as the foundation for good story. All the elements here are discovered on my journey to better story telling, from many other writers, observation and the application of my own blood, sweat and not a few tears.
Story Structure?
The elements follow a particular sequence and grouping, so they could reasonably be described as the foundations of story structure. I settled on elements because many of the writers (almost all) I've encountered believe structure is unnecessary for story. They will maintain good storytelling is an organic consequence of education and a confident command of English, especially grammar. Sadly, the storytelling gods are not so easily impressed. Some exceptional sentence-by-sentence writers struggle to tell a compelling story. They can also be reluctant to dismantle beautiful prose when the story requires it.
Edible Elements
So we have structure, affectionately renamed as the slightly more palatable elements. These story elements are a constant work in progress and are built out as I find the words and examples to define them. Let me know via the contact form if they are helpful, or you have insight that will add to these observations.
